Big news, CcHUB Africa– a technology-oriented center has partnered Google for Startup— a startup program to kick off its PitchdriveAsia tour. The tour which began on the 21st of August 2019, marks the second edition of CcHUB’s Pitchdrive tour. They will take ten selected African startups who leverages hardware and deep technology tools in their businesses, on a tour across Japan, Singapore, South Korea, China, and Hong Kong.
Next on the Big 5, Africa’s second-most populous country, Ethiopia has partnered Alibaba, a Chinese e-commerce giant to grow its digital economy. This was revealed by the Ethiopian Ministry of Innovation and Technology on the 20th of August 2019 in Hangzhou, China. Alibaba Group will leverage this partnership to invest in the development of a tech city in Ethiopia and also encourage other Chinese companies to invest in the country.
Also, Nairobi-based recycler and recycled plastic supplier Mr. Green Africa, has secured undisclosed funding from DOB Equity and Global Innovation Fund in partnership with Unilever. The company will leverage the funds to grow its reach and also build the model that allows it to expand the trade of recyclables, as they aim to build a reliable supplier network. The fund will also give the startup an edge to scale its processing capacity, to produce quality recycled products.
Did you hear? About 700 teachers have been empowered with digital skills by the Africa Code Week in Ghana. The Africa Code Week aims to introduce 1.5 million young Africans to digital and coding skills in 2019. Applaudable!
Finally, YouTube, the popular video-sharing platform is set to remove all advertisements that are targeted at content which kids might watch. This process aims to satisfy the Federal Trade Commission Policy on children’s privacy online.
