We have news that the Ethiopian government shut down internet access again on the 22nd of June 2019 due to a failed Coup d’état by some soldiers in the Amhara state. The shut down as a means to counter the operations, spanned for 100 hours. Internet access was, however, restored on the 27th of June 2019. Is this the new norm in Ethiopia?
Moving on, Kenyan telco Safaricom has launched an anti-fraud system for financial institutions. The solution called International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) will help in preventing fraudulent activities targeted at customers. This solution was built after the telco lost Sh1 million to fraudulent activities.
Big news! Azuri Technologies has launched operations in Zambia! The pay-as-you-go off-grid solar energy provider which secured $26 million in a funding round, plans to use the funds for expansions. Zambia will join Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, and Tanzania in enjoying Azuri Technologies services.
Also, Nigerian e-commerce platform PayPorte has relaunched its website which was shut down months ago. They relaunched the website earlier in the week with a unique and modern design. According to the CEO, the website was re-built from scratch based on customer feedback.
Finally, two Kenyan startups Solar Freeze and Illuminum Greenhouses each won $75, 000 and $25, 000, respectively at the Cisco Problem Solver Challenge. They were chosen for leveraging technology to solve critical challenges that affect livelihood in their communities. Congratulations to them!
