OpenAI has launched a new app ecosystem within ChatGPT, introducing a platform that allows developers to build and integrate third-party applications directly into the AI assistant. This move positions OpenAI as a direct competitor to established app marketplaces like Apple’s App Store and Google Play.

At its DevDay 2025 event, OpenAI announced the introduction of an Apps SDK (Software Development Kit), enabling developers to create interactive applications that users can access through natural language conversations with ChatGPT. These applications include services from companies like Spotify, Zillow, Canva, and Booking.com, allowing users to perform tasks such as generating playlists or searching for properties without leaving the ChatGPT interface.

Users can interact with these applications by mentioning them in their conversations with ChatGPT, prompting a connection and data-sharing setup. OpenAI plans to open submissions for developers to publish their apps later in 2025 and will introduce monetization options through a new commerce functionality, allowing purchases directly within ChatGPT.

To facilitate app discovery, OpenAI is launching an app directory where standout applications—based on design and performance—will receive higher visibility. Initial app partners include major brands like Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow, with more expected later, such as Uber, Target, and Peloton.

This strategic move transforms ChatGPT from a conversational AI tool into a comprehensive platform for accessing and interacting with a wide range of digital services, potentially reshaping the app distribution landscape and challenging the dominance of traditional app stores.
