Elon Musk, founder of Twitter and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, announced the launch of xAI, a new artificial intelligence startup with the mission to “understand the true nature of the universe.”

According to Musk, xAI will compete with the likes of OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, the creators of other popular chatbots like ChatGPT, Bard, and Claude.

Alumni from DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Twitter, and Tesla make up the xAI team. They have worked on projects including DeepMind’s AlphaCode and OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 chatbots.

Greg Yang, a co-founder of xAI, claims that the company would study the “mathematics of deep learning,” a branch of artificial intelligence, and “develop the ‘theory of everything’ for large neural networks” to advance AI.

According to reports, Musk incorporated xAI in Nevada in March. On xAI’s website, the company highlights its separation from X Corp, and adds that it will “work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission.” Previously, he had changed the name of Twitter to “X Corp.” in several financial filings.

The company’s website states that Musk and his team will provide more details during a live Twitter Spaces session on Friday.
