According to reports, Elon Musk is planning to launch an artificial intelligence company to compete with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.

OpenAI, which was founded as a non-profit organization in 2015, includes Musk as one of its co-founders. In 2018, he stepped down from the company’s board of directors.

Musk apparently had disagreements with management, notably about the safety of AI, and quit the board after three years.

Shortly thereafter, Microsoft invested $1 billion in the company, and it transitioned to a for-profit venture.

This shift would place Musk in the company of other innovators in the field of generative AI, such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and even OpenAI.

According to reports, Musk is already in discussions with current investors from SpaceX and Tesla to secure funding for the new firm and is in the process of building a team of AI researchers and engineers.

Thousands of graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia, devices that power computing needed for intense activities like AI and high-end graphics, have reportedly been acquired by Musk.

Musk has recently changed Twitter Inc. to X Corp. in official company filings. This action was taken as a step toward his ultimate goal of developing an “everything app” named “X.”

The technology behind the viral chatbot phenomenon ChatGPT, called Generative AI, is being actively pursued by major giants like Microsoft and Google.

According to Musk, models like GPT-4, the most recent offering from OpenAI, have the potential to propagate misinformation.

Musk and more than 2,600 other tech executives and researchers did, however, sign an open letter on March 30 calling for a temporary halt to further AI development due to “profound risks to society and humanity.”
