A new community-based pilot program called Birdwatch has been introduced by Twitter that encourages individuals to detect information in Tweets that they find to be deceptive and write notes that provide an insightful context.

Notes will be available only on a different Birdwatch platform in this first phase of the pilot.

The helpfulness of notes added by other contributors may also be scored on this platform by pilot participants.

“These notes are being intentionally kept separate from Twitter for now, while we build Birdwatch and gain confidence that it produces context people find helpful and appropriate,” Twitter said in a statement.

Subsequently, when there is consensus from a large and varied collection of contributors, we aim to make notes directly visible on Tweets to the global Twitter audience,”Eventually we aim to make notes visible directly on Tweets for the global Twitter audience, when there is consensus from a broad and diverse set of contributors,”

“We believe this approach has the potential to respond quickly when misleading information spreads, adding context that people trust and find valuable”

All data submitted to Birdwatch will be open and downloadable to the public.
