The Africa Food Prize is the premier prize honoring an exceptional person or organization that is driving the effort to transform the reality of farming in Africa from a company that struggles to survive to one that flourishes.
The US $100,000 award honors Africans who are directing the continent’s agricultural agenda. In order to provide new opportunities for food security and economic growth for all Africans, it shines a focus on audacious projects and innovations in technology that can be reiterated across the continent.
In order to recognize accomplishments in African agriculture, Yara International ASA in Norway created the Africa Food Prize, which was formerly known as the Yara Prize.
People from Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Mozambique were honored with the Yara Prize for their achievements in boosting the productivity, profitability, and resilience of agricultural fields.
When the Yara Prize was relocated to Africa in 2016 and renamed the Africa Food Prize, it immediately became a prize with a strong sense of African home, African identity, and African ownership.
The goal of the Africa Food Prize is to honor remarkable individuals—women, men, and institutions—whose outstanding contributions to African agriculture are paving the way for a new era of economic opportunity and sustainable food security for all Africans.
Criteria for Selection Include:
Contribution to reducing poverty and hunger and/or improving food and nutrition security in measurable terms.
Contribution to providing a vital source of income and/or employment in measurable terms.
Potential for transformative change through scalability, replication and sustainability.
Increased awareness and cooperation among African audiences and organizations.
