Apple launched its contactless payment service in South Africa, hoping to cash in on the country’s growing mobile payments market.

As the coronavirus crisis has triggered a transition towards e-commerce and contactless payments, the use of digital finance and payment systems has increased in South Africa and elsewhere.

Apple Pay has joined Samsung Pay, the company’s digital wallet service that debuted in South Africa in 2018.

Apple announced the service’s launch without providing further information.

Absa Group, Nedbank Group, and Discovery Bank are the three South African banks that offer the service.
