Kenyan re-commerce startup Badili has secured a US$400,000 debt facility from French development organization Proparco to bolster its refurbished electronics initiative.

Established in 2021, Badili operates in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, focusing on the aggregation, repair, and resale of used or damaged mobile phones. The company partners with major e-commerce platforms, local trade associates, and mobile network operators to reintroduce these devices into the market. By utilizing local refurbishment processes, Badili offers consumers access to premium smartphone brands at a fraction of the cost of new models, ensuring quality is maintained.

The recent funding from Proparco’s Bridge by Digital Africa facility aims to enhance smartphone accessibility, improve connectivity, and promote sustainability in Kenya. This initiative not only provides affordable devices to consumers but also contributes to reducing electronic waste.

Rishabh Lawania, founder and CEO of Badili, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Getting validation and trust from Proparco is a great boost to the morale of the team that is building a sustainable company that enables Africans to own smartphones for a fraction of the cost of a new one.” He further highlighted the company’s plans for profitability and expansion across Africa, welcoming Proparco as a significant partner in Badili’s growth journey.

This funding underscores the growing investor interest in Africa’s re-commerce sector, reflecting a broader commitment to sustainable technology solutions and economic development across the continent.
