Kenyan internet service provider Mawingu has raised $20 million in a Series C funding round led by Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Managers. This investment aims to accelerate Mawingu’s mission of providing affordable and reliable internet to underserved communities across Kenya.

Founded in 2012, Mawingu has become a significant player in bridging the digital divide in East Africa. The company utilizes solar-powered wireless technology to deliver internet services to rural and peri-urban areas, where traditional telecom infrastructure is often lacking. Currently, Mawingu connects over 120,000 people and plans to extend its reach to one million individuals by 2028.

The Series C funding will support the expansion of Mawingu’s network coverage and infrastructure, enabling the company to scale its operations and serve more communities in need of internet access. CEO Farouk Ramji emphasized that this investment is a testament to the company’s impact-driven approach and resilience in a challenging funding environment.

The backing from Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Managers, a private equity fund focused on African infrastructure projects, underscores the growing investor confidence in sustainable and scalable connectivity solutions in Africa. Mawingu’s success highlights the potential for combining social impact with financial sustainability in the region’s tech ecosystem.

As Mawingu continues to expand its services, the company remains committed to its mission of providing meaningful internet access to underserved communities, fostering digital inclusion, and contributing to the socio-economic development of East Africa.
