Global digital infrastructure company Equinix, Inc. has announced plans to build a high-performance data centre in Lagos, Nigeria, marking a strategic investment of US$22 million.
Named the “LG3” facility, the new site will reportedly be the first purpose-built Equinix data centre in West Africa and is scheduled to become operational in the first quarter of 2026.
Equinix states the facility will focus on interconnection and edge services, delivering its “Fabric” offering to allow businesses in Nigeria to securely link physical and virtual infrastructure, cloud platforms and global Equinix locations.
Wole Abu, Managing Director for West Africa at Equinix, said: “LG3 marks a significant milestone in Equinix’s long-term commitment to bridging Africa’s digital divide… As Lagos emerges at the crossroads of talent, innovation, and global connectivity, this facility is accelerating access to technologies like cloud, AI, and the next wave of startups.”
The investment forms phase one of a broader expansion plan in the region, with Equinix indicating total African investment could reach approximately US$100 million over the next two years. (
Nigeria, Africa’s second-largest economy, is viewed by Equinix as a key digital hub, particularly in Lagos, due to its subsea cable connectivity, growing tech ecosystem and demand for cloud, data centre and edge infrastructure.
The announcement underscores growing momentum for data centre and interconnection infrastructure in Africa, especially in markets where latency-sensitive applications (such as AI, gaming, real-time commerce and edge compute) are becoming vital. Analysts widely credit such developments as critical for converting the continent’s digital growth potential into operational infrastructure.
