Tara’s technology launch in Africa is pioneered by Econet after having conducted multiple pilot tests in Kenya since 2019.
Testing was done across the waters between Mombasa Old Town and Diani in Kwale County to bring high-speed bandwidth to communities on the South Coast to service travelers, ex-pats, and remote workers in the area.
The technology will be deployed using Liquid Telecom’s fiber-optic backbone and mobile network Infrastructure.
As a project at X, Alphabet’s Moonshot Factory (formerly known as Google [x]), the aim is to provide high-speed affordable internet across a vast network of connected and unconnected communities using innovations in optical communication technology.
The technology uses light beams to deliver high speed, high-capacity connectivity as high as 20 Gbps as a very narrow, invisible beam sent between two small Taara terminals to create a link over long distances that span up to nearly 12.5 miles.
X’s project Taara will be providing connectivity to thousands of end-users and households by extending the reach of broadband network services to geographical areas where fiber installations are impossible due to infrastructural challenges (in areas such as mountains, rivers, rugged terrains, national parks, etc.) and not economically feasible.
