Strive Masiyiwa’s major telecoms operator, Econet has launched an electrification project which aims to transform rural enterprises whilst creating employment in Zimbabwe, a week after the entrepreneur unveiled his 100 million USD challenge fund.
The Ugesi Energy project is worth millions of dollars. It is the second Econet energy business after the launch of Distributed Power Africa (DPA) in 2017. Econet Energy CEO, Norman Moyo has said the rural electrification program is part of Masiyiwa’s broader vision to economically transform rural communities.
“This is very much part of that vision. The entrepreneurs need reliable power if they are to build modern businesses. Ugesi is our answer to those in need of power for start-ups such as dairies, poultry incubators, water pumps for horticulture and even small-scale manufacturing and assembly businesses,” he said.

They plan to build solar mini-grids at 100 sites across rural Zimbabwe. The grid will provide power for businesses and homes in the communal areas. The initial phase will make sure small grids provide electricity to support businesses, local administration facilities at growth points, schools and clinics.
The Matabeleland provinces would be the first beneficiary of the rural solar energy program in Zimbabwe with construction set to commence next month.
Moyo said. “Our plan is to roll out at least 10 systems in Matabeleland North and South first, in line with the guidelines we have received from our founder (Masiyiwa)”
