In order to improve the user experience, Ghana’s largest e-commerce platform, Tonaton.com is working on plans to make delivery of packages by drones in Ghana. According to the Managing Director Tonaton Zubair Riaz, “Drone deliveries is one of the many ways we are trying to improve the user experience by not just cutting down the service cost but reducing the delivery times as well.” The drone service, when launched, will be added to the current “Buy Now” service by the e-commerce platform in Ghana.

Currently, regulations in Ghana surrounding the use of drones are quite hazy but there is a rule by the Ghana Civil and Aviation Association (GCAA) that state that all drones be duly registered.

Even after registration, there is a long list of unapproved areas where drones cannot be flown in Ghana, with majority of those areas in the Greater Accra Region, where most of Tonaton.com sales occur. The launch of this facility will be a new area for Tonaton and e-commerce in Africa as a whole.

The concept of using drones for deliveries may not be spectacular to Amazon world if Tonaton.com‘s new plans materialize.
