South Africa is now one of the first countries to launch 5G in Africa as Rain, a data-only network has partnered with Huawei to roll out 5G services come September 2019, in South Africa.

The hardware manufacturer Huawei, will supply the devices that subscribers will need to enjoy the high speed mobile standard. The announcement was made during the 2019 Mobile World Congress (MWC). Rain intends to cover most of Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town by rolling out 5G network across its network.

Huawei launched its range of 5G end-to-end product solutions, from bearer network, core network and base stations to terminals during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona early 2018. They showcased their 5G foldable smartphone, the HUAWEI Mate X; and the HUAWEI 5G CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) Pro. Huawei’s solutions will allow Rain to leverage on its LTE network and allocated spectrum for 5G deployment.

According to Rain Group CEO Willem Roos “The network will provide fiber-like speeds without the installation complexities, time delays and cost of laying fiber in underserved areas. Rain is very optimistic about the business prospects of South Africa’s 5G network, and will continue to invest more in 5G networks and better serve users,”.

Shi Jilin, President of Huawei Cloud Core Network Product Line, said: “It is an important step working with Rain to build the first 5G network in South Africa. With our solutions, we are committed to working with operators to build future-oriented networks that will give them the maximum value from their investment and give their customers the best user’s experience.”

This collaboration will enable Rain roll out the 5G network in a quick and profitable manner.
