In our trend of celebrating innovative ideas from young minds in the African Continent, we are quite thrilled to introduce you to Mustapha Diyaol Haqq, a Ghanaian Youngster in High School. He has been credited with the development of a system that accurately detects and predicts breast cancer in people.

“We’ve shown it is possible to predict and diagnose Breast Cancer with Machine Learning/ Artificial Intelligence. We are confident with larger data of Ghanaians, models could be developed with higher accuracy scores that could be used in the real world by doctors to diagnose breast cancer efficiently, with ease and a higher accuracy” – Mustafa had said.

The system integrates both Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in its operations and with a simple and quick fine needle test, it is possible to achieve results just after obtaining some fluid or cells from a breast lesion or cyst. The system has two classifications which are the malignant– which indicates cancer and the benign — which indicates the absence of it.

“The goal is to classify whether the breast cancer is benign or malignant and predict the recurrence and non-recurrence of malignant cases after a certain period. To achieve this we used machine learning classification methods to fit a function that can predict the discrete class of new input.” He said.

With a dataset of over 569 samples of malignant and benign tumor cells, the model was tested on the Machine Learning repository in the University of California, Irvine. Mustapha recently published his first research paper on the use of Predictive Analysis to Diagnose Breast Cancer.

Mustapha is also a Content Developer, Code Instructor and Volunteers at Ghana Code Club where he teaches programming.
