Kenya Safaricom has announced the trial program of its new technology which is targeted at improving network coverage in urban areas.

The initiative is called TubeStar Base Station and will replace the standard tower base station with a tubular structure that takes up to 75 percent less land than a typical base station.

The TubeStar removes the need for a compound and perimeter wall around the base station because it encompasses all the equipment within the tower structure. Also, the system cuts the need for diesel generators and replaces it with high performance lithium batteries and also, reduces environment pollution and emissions.

The TubeStar was deployed to Clay Works situated along Nairobi/Thika Highway and will provide network for Roysambu drift settlements that have witnessed call drops for long.

According to Safaricom, the base station will provide network in the mentioned location in order to stop reliance on other cells. The telco company has invested over Kshs 100 billion and plans to spend close to Kshs 38 billion till March 2019.
