Most popular instant messaging app, WhatsApp has now announced that it has signed a new deal with Google and WhatsApp backups will no longer count against a user’s Google Drive storage quota. This policy will come into effect for all users on November 12, 2018.
This was announced during the launching of Google One storage subscription plans for everyone in the U.S. Google One is a consolidation of all of Google’s subscription services, including Google Drive, Google Photos, and Gmail, under one plan.
This is good news for many especially those who are heavy on media transfer across devices everyday via WhatsApp.

Furthermore, WhatsApp backups that have not been updated in more than a year will automatically be removed. This however will be avoided if backups can be done manually before October 30th.
WhatsApp allows users to back up their chats and media to Google Drive so that their chats and media are transferable if they change phone or buy a new one.
Users must have an active Google Drive account set up on their devices before WhatsApp chats and media can be synced on Google Drive.
