INTRODUCING “MATATU”
An IT firm in Lagos looks to create 12,000 jobs in Nigeria by launching a mobile application that redefines transportation. The app will first be launched in Lagos but plans to expand to other big cities in Nigeria if successful. The eventual hope is that the app, Matatu, will reach all 36 states in the federation of Nigeria. Want further information on this app? Read further to find out.
The Matatu app is designed specifically to enable passengers to book “tricycles”, popularly known as Keke Marwa, and other mini vehicles from the convenience of their mobile devices. These are already forms of transportation that are used within Nigeria but haven’t been popularized as such. The app also allows minibus and tricycle operators to connect to it. The idea being that individuals will have more transport options that they can access through their smartphones.
With Matatu, the hope is the already established minibus and tricycle system will become more systemized, convenient and safe. Keke Marwa drivers available on the application will be those who are well-trained and registered on the app. These individuals will be equipped on their devices with Matatu that will assist them to locate the nearest passenger.
The Ministry of Transportation within Lagos state is excited about the launch of this new app and has expressed willingness to assist the app developers in its implementation. Matatu has also gotten in touch with the Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria and other stakeholders. One of these collaborations has resulted in the acquisition of 12,000 tricycles that the IT firm plans to give to 12,000 trained tricycle drivers registered under the Matatu scheme.
On the front of creating jobs, individuals who would like to become tricycle drivers simply need to see any of the top tricycle sellers, who have agreed to make their products available at subsidized prices with the Matatu investment scheme.
