MTN Group is the first mobile money operator to launch an AI-enabled chatbot service. The Mobile Money (MoMo) chatbot was revealed in Ivory Coast in May 2019. The chatbot will interface with customers to handle payment transactions on Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, and SMS. MTN promises to roll out in other countries soon.
MTN also recently released an instant messaging service called “Ayoba”. The chatbot assistant will be included in Ayoba to help users access MTN’s MoMo services. The President and CEO of MTN Group, Rob Shuter said the MoMo chatbot seeks to bridge the gap in customer service by leveraging modern technologies like Artificial Intelligence.

The chatbot instantly replies messages on MTN’s MoMo, enabling customers to interact anytime and anywhere on social media and messaging platforms. Artificial Intelligence helps the chatbot accurately provide the right answers to the customer’s query. MTN’s MoMo has also helped in reducing long payment queues and created employment for thousands of MoMo agents across Africa.
MTN Mobile Money is a fast and secure avenue for money transactions with a mobile phone. It is used by customers across Africa in Benin, Cameroon, Congo, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia, Uganda, Guinea Republic, Liberia, Ghana, Swaziland, and Botswana. The MoMo chatbot will be able to engage over 60 million customers across Africa.
