We have news that, South African based cryptocurrency platform, CoinDirect raised €1million in an investment round led by Concentric. The platform allows its users send and receive Bitcoin, Tether, Dash and Litecoin directly from their wallet. They plan to expand to Europe and Africa with the aid of the funding. This is a good step by the company.
Next on the Big 5, South African mobile Company Cell C has announced that effective 1st of March, 2019, its CEO Jose Dos Santos will step down. They said to announce an interim CEO soon. Cell C is a mobile service operator in South Africa and Jose Dos Santos will take over as a consultant offering strategic advice to the Chairman of the Cell C Board.
Surfline Communications and Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) has collaborated to provide free wifi connection to public libraries members in Greater Accra Region, Ghana. The partners have signed a memorandum of understanding while Surfline will devise a model for user subscription, GhLA will publicize and project the partnership. Nice move by Ghana!
Moving on, Ethiopia has finalized all preparations to undergo the first ever digitized national population and housing census. This will kick off during their fourth upcoming National Population and Housing Census scheduled for April 7-28. According to the CSA, the country is embracing Chinese technologies as they have purchased 180,000 tablets from Huawei and Lenovo. This is the first of its kind in Africa!
Finally on the Big 5, Little Cab, an e-hailing ride service based in Kenya, plans to raise 50 million USD as it makes its move to expand to Tanzania and Ghana. The company will first kick of in Tanzania and later launch in Accra, May.
