The Nigeria National Union of Road Transport Workers NURTW and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, has reached an agreement with bike hailing startups in Lagos. The new agreement will make riders pay N500 ($1.38) daily ticket fees to operate seemly in any part of Lagos.
The issues between NURTW, RTEAN, and local government began earlier this year with the influx of ride-hailing operators into Lagos.
The transport union workers popularly called ‘Agbero’ have at different times clashed and harass riders over non-payment of levies. This harassment led ride-hailing bodies (like ORide, MAX, and Gokada) began a prolonged dialogue with the Road Transport Union.

At first, the Transport Union proposed a N1000 ($2.75) daily ticketing fee for the rider. The startups rejected the fee, prompting the Lagos state government to intervene in the matter.
The intervention from the Lagos state government brought the new daily ticketing fee to N500. The new fee will allot 200 payment to the NURTW team, another N200 to the RTEAN arm with an additional N100 charge to the local government authority where the ticket was sold.
However, we are yet to know who will bear the brunch of paying the imposed fee. Would it be the Riders or ride-hailing startups?
Meanwhile, the new agreement did not dissolve the proposed license of bike hailing startups by the Lagos state government.
