Uber has launched Uber Connect, its same-day delivery service, in Kenya. It also launched an intercity bus service in Egypt as part of its effort to adapt its technology to meet local demands. The launch of Uber Connect in Kenya is part of its strategy to formulate better ways of doing business post-COVID-19 pandemic.

In April, Uber launched Uber Connect and Uber Direct to fully venture into the logistics ecosystem. It recently acquired Postmates, an on-demand food delivery service in the US for $2.65 billion. In the logistics sector, there is a global shift from motorcycle ride-hailing to offering delivery services. MAX, Gokada, Little and Bolt made similar moves in Africa this year. Launching a delivery business will help Uber in cities like Lagos Nigeria where motorcycling ride-hailing services were banned.

Uber Connect will join Uber Boda, an existing and affordable same-day delivery service to deliver packages in Kenya. The weight limit for packages is 15kg, the base fare is KES 55, and the rest of the distance will be billed at KES 14 per kilometer and KES 1 per minute.

Uber’s Intercity Bus launch has made Egypt the first country to globally launch out this service. The aim is to connect cities via the Uber app, starting with Egypt. The General Manager of Uber Egypt, Ahmed Khalil said, “We are honored to witness another global product launch from Egypt. The country is an innovation hub and a fantastic environment for testing new products”.

The intercity buses will provide convenient transportation solutions within and across cities. The first routes will be from Cairo to Alexandria before extending to other cities across the country. The service is accessible week-long and will ply 8 to and from for eight times every day.

Riders can also use the mobile app to pre-book trips. There are about 9 picks up/drop-off points across Cairo and Alexandria. The bus will follow all COVID-19 safety measures, encourage physical distancing for riders, as well as install sanitizers dispensers in all buses.
