After the initial competition for the Earthshot Prize was held in 2021, three African organizations were chosen to compete for the top prize. These organizations were Sanergy from Kenya, Reeddi Capsules from Nigeria, and the Pole Pole Foundation from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In the meantime, in December of 2022, the coveted environmental prize was awarded to a startup company called Mukuru Clean Stoves, which was situated in Kenya and provided cleaner-burning stoves to women in Kenya in order to minimize dangerous indoor pollution and provide a safer way for them to cook.

The prize is presented on a yearly basis to a total of five winners, who are each given a prize grant of $1.2 million in order to expand their respective projects.

The submission period closes on January 27.
