Google has announced a significant initiative to support higher education across Africa by offering university students in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe free access to its premium AI subscription, Google AI Pro, for one year. This offer is available to eligible students aged 18 and above and will run from October 7 to December 9, 2025. Once activated, the subscription remains valid for 12 months.

The Google AI Pro package includes access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, Google’s most advanced AI model, which offers features such as:

  • Deep Research: Generate custom research reports by synthesizing information from multiple sources.
  • NotebookLM: An AI-powered note-taking tool that helps students organize and summarize their notes.
  • Veo 3: A tool that transforms text or images into short videos.
  • Nano Banana: A feature that allows students to creatively edit and transform images.
  • 2TB of Cloud Storage: Ample space for storing notes, projects, and other academic materials across Google services.

Alex Okosi, Google’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized that this initiative aims to equip the next generation of African leaders with foundational AI skills and the most capable models to enable them to thrive in the classroom and prepare for the future workforce. (

To take advantage of this offer, eligible students can sign up through the Google Gemini website before December 9, 2025. This initiative underscores Google’s commitment to advancing digital learning and innovation across Africa.
