When the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub revealed its collaboration with Decagon for its Dev-Placement Programme, software developers and SMEs in Nigeria received a big boost.

In January 2021, 100 developers and 43 SMEs were chosen for the Developer Placement program out of 1722 applications received from developers and 734 applications received from SMEs.

During the program’s January launch, it was announced that selected software developers would be paired with selected SMEs for a three-month paid internship opportunity.

The Developer Placement program will promote digital enablement for selected SMEs seeking to create social-impact products or projects, in addition to offering a great opportunity for software developers to upskill by working on real-time projects/products and acquiring industry experience.

Chinazom Chidolue, Head of Wealth Advisory at Shecluded Financial Services, described DevPlacement as “amazing” when asked about the program’s effect. “Thanks to the fresh perspectives that the interns bring, the Developer Placement Program has opened our eyes to new opportunities,” she says. “DevPlacement is fantastic,” said Azubuike Akunne, creator of NeuBite SME. It provides free or discounted labor as well as suggestions on how to deal with talent. I’m hoping that these interns will be considered for positions in the businesses. I’m hoping that other small businesses can hire interns.”

DevPlacement has unlocked exciting potentials for Shecluded, according to one of the developers assigned to him. “I have improved Shecluded loan items by working with other interns,” he says. We’ve also created a new ‘Savings Module’ for the company.

Lamide Johnson, Interim Country Director of the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub, reaffirmed the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub’s role in fostering digital skills and cultivating tech talent in Nigeria in response to this.

The Developer Placement Programme is part of the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub’s dedication to supporting the country’s technological growth and innovation.
