IS YOUR BROWSING TIME ENOUGH FOR YOU?
An app created in Nigeria has been named the Most Innovative Mobile App at the Global Mobile World awards. The App introduces an interesting and disruptive technology as its main functions are to provide users with an easy way to earn free airtime and then discover new content as well. The app is named Sliide and it is preparing to launch into the markets of South Africa and Pakistan soon.
The App was designed as an answer to the problem of data being expensive as compared to incomes in Nigeria and other emerging markets. According to a study by a division of the consulting firm PwC, called Startegy&, data costs have to fall by on average 70% globally in order to make it affordable enough for 83% of the world’s population to purchase just 500 MB of data. A high number of the people who currently do not have access to internet connections today are in emerging economies and simply cannot afford internet data packages at their current prices.
Sliide, after providing individuals with simple ways of earning free data, capitalize on the existence of data to provide individuals with content right on their lock screens. Content consists of personalized news stories from both national and international publishers, sponsored content and advertisements. The app then turns around and uses 65% of its advertising revenues to buy mobile data from mobile-network providers and redistribute it to its users. Users can also earn more airtime in the Sliide app by completing simple tasks such as filling out surveys to help brands in their market research.
Sliide started out in 2016 and since then has been able to provide users with monthly free airtime and attracted advertisers such as Unilever, who view it as a proven mobile advertising channel. In addition to the Most Innovative Mobile App, Sliide has won a number of other accolades in the UK, Nigeria and South Africa (just to name a few)
Sliide’s CEO, Corbyn Munnik, is of the view that this is just one world-changing innovation that will be birthed from the continent of Africa in upcoming years. Have you used the Slide app before? It can be downloaded from the Google Play Store (currently available in Nigeria) or directly from www.sliideairtime.ng.
