Happy weekend guys,

Welcome to this week’s last edition of the Big 5 Daily!

Today on the Big 5, we bring you information on the biggest innovations made in Africa.

Enjoy!

We have news that Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST), a Pan-African entrepreneurial training and tech incubator has called on applicants to submit for it’s class of 2021 program. The program will be held in Accra, Ghana and applications will close on the 7th of February 2019.

Jumia and a range of other startups under the Rocket Internet SE– a European Internet company headquartered in Berlin, has generated $605 million in profit from their IPOs for Rocket Internet. Rocket Internet SE aims to develop new businesses and they will leverage the funds to do so.

There is also news that SafeBoda, a Uganda-based on-demand motorcycle-hailing startup which expanded to Lagos Nigeria in May 2019, has expanded to Ibadan, another Nigerian city. This increases SafeBoda’s coverage to 6 cities and 4 countries – Kampala (Uganda), Nairobi (Kenya), Lagos and Ibadan (Nigeria) and Barcelona (Spain)

Also, Airbnb, an online marketplace for offering and booking lodging, primarily homestays, and tourism experiences, has announced plans to launch an IPO in 2020. This follows after declaring initial plans to list on March 2019, alongside Uber and Lyft.

Finally, Facebook launched Portal TV – an accessory that offers video chats to television screens. Users will have to connect the TV to their TV’s HDMI port, sign in to their Facebook accounts, and proceed to call via either Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp.

…and there you have it for today’s Big 5 Daily!

Hope you had fun?

Thanks for joining!
