We begin with events as it was announced earlier this year that the Annual Tech Summit will hold in Kigali, Rwanda from the 13th to 15th of February. It calls on to investors, entrepreneurs, tech and innovation hubs, policymakers amongst others to be in attendance. Over 35 industry leaders would speak at the Tech Summit which is divided into 3 categories which are, the Future Summit, the Africa Start-up Summit and the Creative Summit. Do you want to attend? Still on events, it was also announced that Egypt will host the Banking Technology North Africa Week which will span the 28th and 29th of January. The event aims to exhibit various cost-effective innovations that extend into digital banking services which will expand access to the population currently unbanked and also, serve present consumers better. The main topic for the first day is ‘Inclusion, Digital Transformation and Payments Day’ and the topic for the second day is ‘Data Analytics, Cyber and Information Security Day’. Both panels will be discussed by industry leaders.
Also, in Egypt, it was announced 2 days ago that Alexandria city recently concluded a 3 month pilot using an electric bus as public transport. Provided by BYD, a Chinese automobile manufacturer — the buses are said to be environmental-friendly as they cause considerably less pollution than traditional engines. The results of the pilot are yet unknown however, if successful, BYD will produce more for the Egyptian city.
Moving on, we have here an interesting report to share. Deloitte’s 2018 third and final CIO legacy report titled ‘Manifesting Legacy’ was carried out to denote the differences between Vanguards and baseline organizations pertaining to their embrace and the headway they have made in Digital Transformation. The report saw a turnout of 1437 global respondents and it discusses the role of the IT department and even the talents when Digital transformation is regarded. Concluding that the companies with a bigger budget directed at IT are most likely to make a headway digitally.
Finally, to curtail the high success rate of the ‘mysterious R99 debit order’ scam, which was recorded to have hit over 750,000 bank accounts, Payment Association of South Africa (PASA) announced a wide-reaching complex system they called Debi-Check. This will ensure that banks will require clients to electronically confirm and permit debit so as to maintain that both the consumer and banks are on the same page as regards the amount debited. Although Debi-Check is in its initial stages, the Reverse Bank recently granted a 12-month extension for organizations to implement the system.
