News from Tanzania has it that the Ubongo edtech startup, a leading children edutainment company which cuts across millions of families through accessible technology has emerged winner of the ‘Next Billion’ Edtech Prize. The startup received the sum of 25,000 USD at The Varkey Foundation event which held in Dubai on Sunday. The award aims to recognize technologies impact education in low income countries.
In Egypt, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) in partnership with the Egyptian government plan to launch a EGP1 billion ($57.8 million) fund for fintech startups. The fund will support finance startups and fund research in the financial services sector with the aim of establishing the country as a fintech hub.
We also have news about Knife Capital— a Cape Town-based Venture Capital firm. They have partnered with South Africa Small Market Enterprise Fund and Deloitte to launch its Grindstone Accelerator programme aimed at innovation-driven startups in Johannesburg. Grindstone is a structured entrepreneurship development programme that assists small businesses to become sustainable and fundable by enrolling them in a year-long program. Click here to apply.
Finally, another African startup has announced plans for expansion across the continent. Kobo360, a Nigerian tech-enabled platform that aggregates end-to-end haulage operations is set to launch in Accra, Ghana and Nairobi, Kenya in April and May respectively. This announcement follows after the company launched in Togo, West Africa’s largest shipping port.
