Good day Africa. We begin our big 5 daily with news from Egypt.

Last week, we reported that Uganda Communications Commission wanted to start billing bloggers and online content producers annually now, Egypt has followed suit.

President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt has signed into law the Anti-Cyber and Information Technology Crimes legislation. The anti-cybercrime law gives the Egyptian government the power to block any websites it deems to be a threat to national security as well as spreading the ideas of terrorist organizations.


In Uganda, telecommunication giant, MTN has been asked to go public or lose its licensethe company is facing pressure to list its unit in Uganda as Africa’s largest mobile phone company seeks to renew a licence in the country.


Equitel Spins Off Fintech Subsidiary, Finserve to Disrupt Digital Financial Services in East Africa Equity Group has spinned off its fintech subsidiary, Finserve to operate as an autonomous commercial enterprise, delivering solutions not just for its parent company, but to the entire economy, signaling a future defined by disruptive innovation beyond the Group’s current financial services.


Bitcoin exchange platform, BitSika Launched in Ghanathis is a great platform that has enabled users to buy large and small sums of bitcoin instantly via web or USSD. Launched earlier this year, BitSika not only allows both connected and unconnected people to buy and sell bitcoin, it also acts as a wallet service.


And lastly for today is the news from Nigeria. Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) said it has commissioned the building of a technology hub  in Katsina State. This, according to the NITDA, forms part of a resolution to establish tech hubs across 6 geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

The tech hub will be located at the Katsina State Institute of Technology and Management and it will be tasked with harnessing indigenous digital technology innovation for entrepreneurship.
