The automaker also said it plans to become carbon neutral by 2040, just over a week after President Joe Biden took office, promising to combat greenhouse gas emissions and increase electric vehicle sales.
Last year, General Motors sold 2.55 million vehicles in the US, but only about 20,000, the Chevy Bolt hatchback, were Electric Vehicles. In November, it said it was investing $27 billion over the next five years in electric and autonomous vehicles, up from $20 billion expected prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mary Barra, chief executive, has vigorously pushed General Motors to accept Electric Vehicles and switch away from vehicles fuelled by gasoline.
General Motors is open to collaborating with the administration of California and Biden to reach consensus on a national standard and complementary policies to speed up the electrification of light-duty transport.
