Twitter will open its first African office in Ghana

Twitter Inc. will open its first African office in Ghana as part of its strategy to expand into some of the world’s fastest-growing markets.

In a tweet, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey disclosed that the company would be establishing a presence in Africa. “Twitter is now present on the African continent. “Thank you, Ghana, and Nana Akufo-Addo,” he expressed his gratitude.

Twitter says it is building a team in Ghana “to be more immersed in the rich and vibrant cultures that fuel the conversations taking place every day across the continent,” according to a statement.

Twitter’s move was welcomed in Ghana, which has emerged as a hub for African startups alongside the continent’s technology frontrunners, South Africa and Nigeria.

“This is the start of a beautiful partnership between Twitter and Ghana,” Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo tweeted on Monday, saying its presence was crucial for the development of Ghana’s tech sector.

The reason to begin to kick-off with Ghana in Africa, according to Twitter, emerges from Ghana’s advocacy for free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, all of which Twitter supports.

Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host the African Continental Free Trade Area’s Secretariat aligns with Twitter’s overall aim of establishing a presence in the region to help developing and tailoring its  services across Africa.
