Kenya’s Mukuru Clean Stoves is one of the five 2022 winners of the second-annual Earthshot Prize awards, receiving a £1 million prize after a nine-month search for the most inventive and inspiring answers to the most pressing environmental problems the world is currently experiencing.
Over a thousand applications came in from all parts of the world, including one for Mukuru Clean Stoves.
To lessen dangerous indoor pollution and give women in Kenya a safer way to cook, Mukuru Clean Stoves, Kenya offers cleaner-burning stoves.
Mukuru, a female-founded company with a majority of female employees and distributors, not only strives to improve air quality but also gives women the tools they need to succeed financially.
Charlot Magayi, founder and CEO of Mukuru Clean Stoves, said, “It is a wonderful honor to earn this award from the Earthshot Prize. I set out in 2017 to assist Mukuru women in lowering indoor air pollution in their homes. Five years later, 200,000 Kenyan households are using our stoves, and The Earthshot Prize will help us reach 1 million houses, allowing 5 million people to enjoy healthier air and bringing us one step closer to realizing our mission of eliminating household air pollution.

The Prince of Wales said: “I believe that the Earthshot solutions you have seen this evening prove we can overcome our planet’s toughest difficulties,” in his speech during the ceremony. And we may alter our future by assisting them and growing them.
The Earthshot Prize was established in 2020 by Prince William and The Royal Foundation as a global environmental prize to find, promote, and scale innovative eco-solutions for repairing and regenerating the earth.
Applications for the 2023 Earthshot Prize are now being accepted.
