In a major boost for Africa’s digital future, WeThinkCode, the South African-based tuition-free coding academy, has announced a $2 million grant from Google.org aimed at training 12,000 young learners in cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) skills over the next three years.
The funding will support WeThinkCode’s mission to close the tech skills gap in Africa by offering accessible, industry-relevant training to youth from underrepresented communities. This new initiative will focus on AI-related courses and practical applications, preparing students for jobs in emerging fields like machine learning, data science, and AI-driven software development.
“Artificial Intelligence is shaping the future of every industry, and Africa cannot be left behind,” said Nyari Samushonga, CEO of WeThinkCode. “This grant from Google.org will empower thousands of young Africans with the skills they need to thrive in the digital economy, while also addressing unemployment and skills shortages across the continent.”
Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, has long supported initiatives that promote inclusive access to technology and digital skills. This latest investment aligns with the company’s commitment to train 10 million people in Africa by 2030.
“We believe that AI presents a huge opportunity for Africa’s growth, innovation, and competitiveness,” said Charles Murito, Google’s Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa. “By partnering with WeThinkCode, we’re ensuring that young Africans are not just consumers of AI technology but also active creators and innovators.”
The training program will prioritize youth from underserved backgrounds, offering not just technical AI training but also mentorship, industry placements, and soft skills development. Students will work on real-world projects to solve pressing challenges in sectors like agriculture, healthcare, education, and financial services.
Since its founding in 2015, WeThinkCode has trained over 3,000 software developers, with a strong track record of graduates securing employment at leading tech companies. This new partnership with Google.org marks a significant expansion of its impact, potentially transforming the career trajectories of thousands more.
Applications for the first AI training cohort will open later this year, with classes scheduled to begin in early 2026.
